A friend of mine asked me the following question a bit ago.  Tell me if the experience is familiar to you:

Q:  Hi Tisha. I heard that you went threw [through] insomnia.  Do you have any tips on how to cure it?

A:  Yes.  Definitely I went through insomnia.  There was a period in my life that I couldn’t sleep no matter how hard I tried.  I even tried sleeping pills.  Now, while they worked initially, a short time later, my body began to resist them.

As I have mentioned before, I deal with a lot of stress (who doesn’t?) and depression.  However, I fed my depression with the emotional foods, that seem to make me feel good at the time.  Later, those same foods made me stay up at night because my body was working too hard to digest them.

Why?

Because I wasn’t working out, my metabolism was slow.  Also, as mentioned, I wasn’t feeding my body want it needed.  I was feeding my tongue what it wanted.  I knew I had to make a change – so I did.  So I gave my friend the following advice that worked for me:

“The only thing that works for me is a small exercise regime (about 15-20 minutes) and a body purge – smoothie cleanse or 7-10 days of salads, etc. 

You see, what I found to be true is when my body is filled with junk, it works harder.  Hence, the exercise gets the blood circulating properly.  I usually know when I go through insomnia is because I’ve been bad.”

Sadly, I forgot to tell her that the reason that it may take up to seven days is because our bodies have to get rid of all those toxins that it stored up before it begins to act as it should.  I also forgot to mention to her that consistency is key.  Many people go on purges, get the temporal results that they were looking for, and then fall back into their same bad habits.  That will never do.

As I get older, I have to take special care of my body.  My 45 year old self is not the same as my 25 year old self.  I have to eat better and exercise.  When I did, my body didn’t have to work as hard and I began to sleep like a baby.
